It is a challenge to construct an unchangingmathematical model. Intelligent modeling embeds novelfrontier sciences and technologies, such as data modeling,abstract modeling, automatic modeling and verification, andcomputer simulation.Significant achievements have been made in systemmodeling and verification in recent years. This special issueconcentrates on current developments in the areas of systemsmodeling, intelligent computing, and formal verification. Ithas been warmly supported by the authors and more than120 manuscripts were received. After the high-quality peer-reviewedprocess, 33 papers have been selected andpublished.The internal structure of Bivium was exploited andgeneralized to an algorithm, Bivium-Model, by S. Zhanget al. in the paper “Enhanced-Bivium Algorithm for RFIDSystem.” Model-driven engineering has played an essentialrole in software development. The paper by Z. Zhang et al.entitled “Composite-Level Conflict Detection inUMLModelVersioning” presents an approach to conflict detection atthe composite level in model versioning systems for UnifiedModeling Language. A new approach of choreographymodelverification based on Description Logic is presented in thepaper “Verifying Service Choreography Model Based onDescription Logic” by M. Yu et al. A metamodel of servicechoreography is built to provide a conceptual framework tocapture the formal syntax and semantics of service choreog-raphy.Machine theoremproving is one of the formalmethodsthat perform accurate analysis with completeness to someextent. In the paper by Z. Shi et al., “The Formalization ofDiscrete Fourier Transform inHOL”, the authors propose theformalization of DFT in a higher-order-logic theorem provernamed HOL. Given the continuous nature of kinematicanalysis and the shortcoming of the traditional verificationmethods, A.Wu et al. in the paper entitled “FormalKinematicAnalysis of a General 6R Manipulator Using the ScrewTheory” utilize the geometrical theory of HOL4 to developformal reasoning support for the kinematic analysis of aroboticmanipulator and conduct the formal kinematic analy-sis of a general 6R manipulator by high-order-logic theoremproving. In the work by J. Fu et al. “A Deductive Approachtowards Reasoning about Algebraic Transition Systems,”the authors present a deductive approach for specifyingand verifying algebraic transition systems. The semantics ofmodalities and formulas is defined with solutions of algebraicequations. A proof system is constructed to verify propertiesof algebraic transition systems.How to find the optimal transportation route in sea-tradeis very important for the logistics industry. Chu et al. The incremental optimization of the capac-itated single-allocation hub and spoke network problem isconsidered in the paper entitled “Incremental Optimizationof Hub and Spoke Network for the Spokes’ Numbers andFlow” by Y. Wang and Y. Huang. Two mixed-integer linearprogramming formulations are proposed and analyzed. Thepaper by S. Gaona and D. Romero titled “TPA: A Two-PhaseApproach Using Simulated Annealing for the Optimizationof Census Taker Routes in Mexico” presents a Two-PhaseApproach (TPA) to optimize the routes of INEGI’s censustakers. A tuning methodology based on the irace packageis used to determine the parameter values for TPA on asubset of 150 instances provided by INEGI. With the UAVaerial images from a mountainous area in China, C. Xu etal. in the paper entitled “3D Reconstruction of Tree-CrownBased on the UAV Aerial Images” present an algorithm for3D reconstruction of tree-crown. A feature area extractionmethod is proposed based on watershed segmentation, andthe local area correlation coefficient is calculated tomatch thefeature area.In “Numerical Simulation and Experimental Study ofDeep Bed Corn Drying Based on Water Potential” by Z. Liuet al., the authors establish a numerical simulation system ofdeep bed corn drying process which has been proved to beeffective according to the results of numerical simulation andcorresponding experimental investigation and has revealedthat desorption and adsorption coexist in deep bed drying. Tosolve the problem of parameter selection during the designof magnetically coupled resonant wireless power transmis-sion system (MCR-WPT), the paper by S. Lu et al., “TheParameters Optimization of MCR-WPT System Based onthe ImprovedGenetic Simulated Annealing Algorithm,” pro-poses an improved genetic simulated annealing algorithm.The paper by C. Ma, “Estimating Frequency by InterpolationUsing Least Squares Support Vector Regression,” employs amodified version of support vector regression (SVR), leastsquares SVR, to interpolate on Fourier coefficients of receivedsignals and attain high frequency estimation accuracy.With advances in connected vehicle technology, dynamicvehicle route guidance models gradually become indispens-able equipment for drivers. In the work by D. Tian etal. “A Dynamic Travel Time Estimation Model Based onConnected Vehicles”, the authors propose a dynamic traveltime estimation model and a road link dynamic dividingalgorithm. Brake squeal is often analytically studied by acomplex eigenvalue analysis of linearizedmodels of the brakeassembly that is usually quite large. Based on the complexmodes theory, L. Zhang et al. in the paper entitled “AReduced-Order Model for Complex Modes of Brake SquealModel and Its Application to a Flexible Pin-on-Disc System”present a reduced-ordermodel and amethod for determiningthose frequencies having the most effect on the pair ofcoupling frequencies.The model with fuzzy teaching preference provides amore satisfactory solution to a course assignment problemthan assigning arbitrary weights. Using sensitivity analysis,A. Gorka and P. Thipwiwatpotjana in the paper entitled“The Importance of Fuzzy Preference in Course AssignmentProblem” devise amethod for improving a fuzzymembershipfunction. The paper by Y. Chen and Y. Wang, “Two-StageFuzzy Portfolio Selection Problem with Transaction Costs,”describes a two-period portfolio selection problem.Given thefirst-stage decision vector and realization of fuzzy return, theoptimal value expression of the second-stage programmingproblem is derived. Based on cellular automaton, a new staticfloor field method for simulations of evacuation processeswas presented in the paper by X. Yang et al., “Floor FieldModel Based on Cellular Automata for Simulating IndoorPedestrian Evacuation.” The authors propose concept ofscenario familiarity of the crowd for explaining the model.Artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is a popular swarmintelligence technique inspired by the intelligent foragingbehavior of honeybees. By adopting the new fitness evalu-ation method and combining it with the two-dimensionalentropy multithreshold segmentation principle, X. Zhanget al. in the paper entitled “Flame Image SegmentationBased on the Bee Colony Algorithm with Characteristicsof Levy Flights” develop a threshold segmentation test ofthe flame image. Combining grenade explosion method(GEM) with Cauchy operator, J.-G. Zheng et al. in the paperentitled “Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm Combined withGrenade Explosion Method and Cauchy Operator for GlobalOptimization” propose the ABCGC method to improve theperformance of ABC Algorithm.In the work by C. Ruan et al. entitled “Sequence andDirection Planning of Multiobjective Attack in Virtual Navi-gation Based onVariable Granularity OptimizationMethod,”the Variable Granularity Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimiza-tion method is proposed and the planning problem is solvedby decomposing it into attacking sequence planning andattacking direction planning. The electrical power systemconstruction is often a pivotal part in the national andregional economic development plan.The paper by P. Jiang etal. “A New Hybrid Model Based on Data Preprocessing andan Intelligent Optimization Algorithm for Electrical PowerSystem Forecasting” constructs a hybridmodel, known as theE-MFA-BP model that can forecast indices in the electricalpower system, including wind speed, electrical load, andelectricity price. Based on the wind driven optimization(WDO) and differential evolution (DE), the paper by Z.Bao et al., “A Hybrid Global Optimization Algorithm Basedon Wind Driven Optimization and Differential Evolution,”presents a hybrid global optimization WDO-DE algorithm.The populations of individuals both in WDO and in DEemploy an information sharing mechanism to implementcoevolution. Based on QoS differentiation and VM resizing,the paper by R. Hu et al., “A New Resources ProvisioningMethod Based on QoS Differentiation and VM Resizingin IaaS,” proposes an adaptive host resource provisioningmethod to improve the host energy efficiency in IaaS.The paper by J. Ye and H. Ma entitled “MultiobjectiveJoint Optimization of Production Scheduling and Mainte-nance Planning in the Flexible Job-Shop Problem” providesa scientific decision analysis method for enterprise to makeproduction plan and maintenance plan. In the paper by N.Mathematical Problems in Engineering 3Zhao et al. “Simulation-BasedOptimization for Storage Allo-cation Problem of Outbound Containers in Automated Con-tainer Terminals,” the authors propose a simulation-basedoptimization method for the storage allocation problem ofoutbound containers in automated container terminals. Thecomplete simulation-based optimization method is formedby the Particle Swarm Optimization and Genetic Algorithm.J. Xiong et al. in the paper entitled “Controllability of Nonlin-ear Impulsive Stochastic Evolution Systems Driven by Frac-tional Brownian Motion” consider the infinite-dimensionaldynamical control systems described by nonlinear impulsivestochastic evolution differential equations. Sufficient condi-tions for the complete controllability of nonlinear impulsivestochastic systems are formulated and proved.In order to give full consideration to the consumer’spersonal preference in cloud service selection strategies andimprove the credibility of service prediction, the paper by Y.Wang et al. entitled “CC-PSM: A Preference-Aware SelectionModel for Cloud Service Based on Consumer Community”presents a preference-aware cloud service selection modelbased on consumer community. In the work by X. Han andS. Liu entitled “Bayes-Nash Equilibrium of the GeneralizedFirst-Price Auction,” the authors analyze the generalizedfirst-price auction under incomplete information setting.Without setting a reserve price, the efficient symmetricalBayes-Nash equilibrium is characterized. The paper by J.Ding et al. “Modeling the Process of Event Sequence DataGenerated for Working Condition Diagnosis” proposes aprobabilistic generative model for simulating the process ofevent sequence data generated and depicting the workingcondition of equipment at runtime. Q. Yu et al. develop amodeling method of approximated transition system basedon the approximate solution of matrix in the paper entitled“Approximate Analyzing of Labeled Transition Systems.” Itprovides a facility to approximately formal semantic model-ing for continuous-time linear systems and to effective erroranalyzing.In the paper by R. Wang et al. entitled “Modeling andAnalysis of the Obstacle-Avoidance Strategies for a MobileRobot in a Dynamic Environment,” the authors presentthe Markov Decision Process based probabilistic formalmodels for three obstacle-avoidance strategies of a mobilerobot in an uncertain dynamic environment. S. Dai et al.in the paper entitled “A Formal Approach for RT-DVSAlgorithms Evaluation Based on Statistical Model Checking”present an approach to evaluate RT-DVS algorithms usingstatistical model checking. A scalable framework is proposedfor RT-DVS algorithms evaluation, in which the relevantcomponents are modeled as stochastic timed automata, andthe evaluation metrics including utilization bound, energyefficiency, battery awareness, and temperature awareness areexpressed as statistical queries.AcknowledgmentsWe sincerely thank the researchers who contributed to thisspecial issue for their inspiring work, as well as the anony-mous reviewers for their diligent assistance.
