Introduction: The medical practice demonstrates that arterial hypertension is a disease that is usually associated with other health problems; however, this aspect is not always taken into account when developing clinical practice guidelines and diagnosis and treatment protocols, as well as clinical trials. Objective: To establish the need to address comorbidity as a phenomenon of the medical practice, which is important for research and the development of clinical practice guidelines, and diagnosis and treatment protocols. Material and methods: A bibliographic review was carried out using Google Scholar search engine, the authors´ information and notes, and Scielo database of the Virtual Health Library. Results: The association of hypertension with other health problems is identified at the level of etiology and pathogenesis, pathophysiology, and the effects of treatment. Conclusions: Comorbidity is a frequent phenomenon, and although it is a complex problem, there are principles for its analysis from ethiopathogenic, pathophysiological, and therapeutic levels, which should be essentially taken into account when developing guidelines, providing norms for evaluating treatment, and doing research on high blood pressure. Keywords:hypertension, comorbidity, pathophysiology, ethiopathogenic mechanism.</p
