El quehacer de los psicólogos en unidades de oncología en centros hospitalarios de Bogotá

Abstract

This study aims to describe the labor of psychologists in oncologic units at medical centers in Bogota city. A case study with content analysis was developed. The sample was constituted by eight psychologists who signed an informed consent previously. All of them had worked for at least two years in oncologic units. A semi-structured interview which questioned participants about their labor, the activities they deve-loped and the approach they based their practices on was used. A content analysis of deductive and emergent categories was developed. Triangulation between resear-chers and discourse illustrative approach were applied in this analysis. Results show that participants’ reports regarding their labor and functions carried on by them are consistent with psycho-oncology conceptualization. Moreover, it can be established that emotional and cognitive components of patients with cancer and their families are dealt with from the cognitive behavioral approach. Finally, it can be established that oncological units must develop attention guides evidence based, which fit each institution needs. Besides, it is concluded that it is necessary to have institutional programs to prevent burnout in health professional
