In the process of assimilation in American English a sufficient part of Spanish borrowings has changed their semantics. This process was stipulated by linguistic factors as well as by extralinguistic ones, by socio-historical reasons in particular. Modifications were based on “reunderstanding”, metaphoric and metonymical changes.
