This article presents an overview of different approaches to the analysis of informative discourse markers in English discourse, in particular it concentrates on discourse markers “and” and “but”. Discourse markers are studied as elements determining discourse as a process on the one hand, and as discourse elements in the text on the other. The functions of discourse markers are viewed on different structural levels of discourse which makes it possible to compare them and put emphasis on their coherence support.
