The article is devoted to the problem of application of the step-by-step translation of proper names. It is as well discussed the choice of methods forming Russian and Ukrainian correspondences while translating children literature from English.
Two hundred and twelve proper names and their correspondences taken from “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone” by J.K. Rowling were analyzed.
There can be defined thirteen steps of the translation strategy. They are: to define if a language unit is a proper name; to define the class to which it belongs; to define national, linguistic and other charactertistics of the proper name; to define its singleness or plurality; to define its traditional correspondences; to define the possibility to transfer a proper name in its original form into the target language; to choose the method of formal ssmslarity; to check the result offor euphony; to check the correspondence for being a part of the syntagmatic and paradigmatic system of the target language; to check variants of the proper name for being equal; to check the proper name for keeping its aspects in the target language; to define the inner form of the proper name and its relevance; to analyze translation for being equivalent to the original.
The most productive methods of forming the correspondences are traditional correspondences, transcription, transliteration, the method of morphographical modification, transposition of the proper name from the target language, semantic explication, limitation of the variants of the proper name, calque, functional analog, name-for-name change and lost of the priper name significance.
