The Association Between Instagram Use and Body Dissatisfaction in Students at The University of Arizona

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Instagram use and Body Dissatisfaction in University of Arizona students. Prior to beginning research, it was hypothesized that a positive correlation would exist between Instagram use and levels of Body Dissatisfaction; i.e. Body Dissatisfaction levels would increase concurrently with heightened Instagram use. The observed variables of Instagram use included Frequency of Use, Time Spent Editing, and Following of Fitness and Dieting accounts. The original hypothesis was not statistically supported; however, other interesting relationships were observed. The most notable was the correlation between students following fitness and/or dieting accounts and increased extent of photo editing and time spent posting
