Abstract
In concluding the discussions of the Montpellier symposium, the author emphasizes some of the operational difficulties of defining the ecological niche of a species in field conditions. The difficulty of singling out the relevant parameters (from the species viewpoint) is particularly great. A parallel is made with the genotype concept in genetics
