Addiction to video games and the level of self-esteem of young people in the period of early adolescence

Abstract

Ovaj rad temelji se na istraživanju i pročitanoj literaturi u kojem je prikazano koliko je samopoimanje (self koncept) povezano s tendencijom ovisnosti o video igrama i da li na temelju toga postoji razlika između spolova. Na samom početku rada spominjem osnovne karakteristike video igara kao i njihove pozitivne i negativne učinke na igrača. Jedan od negativnih učinka jest ovisnost o video igrama koja se može pojaviti ako igrač pokazuje određene simptome te time dolazimo do djela gdje pišem o njenoj preventivi. Razvoj počinje od samog rođenja gdje se susrećemo s procesom primarne separacije-individuacije koja treba biti uspješna kako bi što uspješnija bila i sekundarna separacija-individuacija. Obitelj je najvažnija okolina za adolescenta zbog njene važnosti u rastu i razvoju adolescenta. U istraživanju saznajemo koliko adolescenti u Istri provode vremena igrajući video igre i da li njihovo igranje upozorava na ovisnost. Na temelju istraživanja možemo zaključiti da mladići provode više vremena igrajući video igre za razliku od djevojaka. Najveći razlog dužeg igranja video igara kod mladića jest manjak samopoštovanja i općeg zadovoljstva dok je kod djevojaka želja za kompetentnosti. Na osnovu našeg istraživanja dokazali smo dvije hipoteze: 1. Kod oba spola postoji povezanost između uspješnosti razvoja ili ovladavanja adolescentnom krizom i razine njihove ovisnosti o video igrama. 2. Razlika postoji među spolovima tako da mladići pokazuju veću tendenciju prema ovisnosti o video igrama nego djevojke i da postoji razlika u aspektima samopoimanja (self koncepta) koji su značajni u tome.This work is based on research and literature which show how is self-esteem (self concept) related to the tendency of video game addiction and whether there is a difference between sexes. At the beginning of this work I mentioned primary characteristics of video games as well as positive and negative effects on the players. One of many negative affect is video game addiction, which can appear if player show some of the symptoms, so I am also mentioning about their prevention. Development begins from birth where we meet with the primary process of separation-individuation which needs to be successful as well as secondary separation-individuation. Family is the most important ambience for adolescent because of their importance in growing and developing. In research we find out how much time adolescents from Istra consume video games and does playing video games warns on beginning of an addiction. Based on research we can conclude that more time on playing video games is consumed by boys, unlike girls who are spending less time. Major reason of playing video games with the boys is their deficit in self-esteem and general satisfaction while in girls is desire for competence. Based on our research we have proved two hypotheses: 1. At both sexes there is a connection between the success of development overcoming and adolescent crisis and the levels of their addiction to the video games. 2. There is a difference between the sexes in the way that boys show a greater tendency toward video game addiction than girls and there is a difference in the aspects of self-esteem (self concept) that are significant to that
