Pomological and chemical characteristics of strawberry (Fragaria spp.) grown on site "Kobatuša"

Abstract

Strawberry is the fruit species that has a wide area of distribution and different farming systems. Success in the cultivation of strawberries depends on the genetic characteristics of the certain varieties and the external factors that influence its development, and the most important are climate, soil and position. The research was carried out on the plantation of strawberries that contained 1,500 plants during the growing season 2015. Plantation was built on an open site “Kobatuša” near Posedarje. The system of cultivation was in strips at elevated beams being used black PVC foil. The varieties that had beend grown in the plantation were Clery and Alba, and the plantation was equipped with a secured system of drip irrigation. The strawberry growing plots were oriented north-south. Single growing plots were 40 cm appart and double growing plots were 100 cm appart. A distance between growing plants was 20 cm. A sample of the fruit of each variety was taken in May during the maturation phase. In the lab, we analyzed the basic pomological and chemical characteristics of fruit. The basic pomological characteristics were determined by measuring the weight, height, width and thickness of the fruit. Chemical analysis of strawberry fruits determined the amounts of carbohydrates, acid and pH. Here, we show that obtained values of measured parameters differed between varieties. Variety Alba, in relation to the variety Clery, had higher values measured pomological properties. Also, the variety Alba had higher values of the measurement of soluble solids, in relation to the variety Clery, while the value of total acidity and pH were more uniform
