Migraine and stroke

Abstract

Postoje dvije vrste moždanog udara: ishemijski moždani udar i hemoragijski udar. A migraine is a primary headache characterized by recurrent attacks of pulsating headache accompanied by nausea, vomiting and other combinations of neurogical symptoms. Migraine is the third most frequent disease in the world with prevalence of 14.7 %. It is generally thought that the migraine is caused by neuronal dysfunction. The most common types of migraine are without aura and with aura. The migraine affects women more than men, which is explained by the sex hormones activity. A stroke is a neurological disorder in which poor blood flow to the brain and insufficient oxygen level result in cell death. Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability in the world. There are two types of stroke: ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke. People with migraine are often associated a higher risk of ischemic and haemorrhagic People with migraine are often associated a higher risk of ischemic and haemorrhagic stroke. The association is the most noticeable in women under age of 45 with frequent migraine attacks. Women who suffer from migraine and smoke or use oral contraceptives are at the higher risk of stroke. Various theories explain stroke in patients with at the higher risk of stroke in patients with migraine. There are three possible explanations mentioned. One is that the pathophysiological background of migraine itself can lead to stroke. The second is that there are common comorbidities in migraine and stroke, the third is that some syndromes can manifest a comorbidities in migraine and stroke, the third is that some syndromes can manifest in a headache similar to migraine and cerebrovascular diseases. Also, the migraine medications, Also, the migraine medications, especially vasoconstrictors, could be linked with a higher stroke risk
