Fear and Anxiety in Children of Preschool Age

Abstract

The aim of this work was to explain the fear and anxiety in children of preschool age, their classification and treatment approaches. Fear is a present emotion in almost every child in a certain period of development, and in pre-school age there is numerous developmental fears like fear of the dark, fear of separation, fear of animals, fear of socialization and many others presented in this paper. In case of fear, the object of fear is real and recognized. Unlike fear, anxiety is grounded in an unspecified object and represents inner fear which is harder to recognize. The most common forms of anxiety in children of preschool age have social anxiety and panic attacks. Therapeutic approaches include: parents with the main role in the prevention of children's fears – it should be remembered that overprotective parents prevent children to grow independently their developmental fears; play with a variety of therapeutic techniques; prescription drugs in combination with another techniques in the most severe forms of the disorder
