Patient education before dialysis treatment

Abstract

Kronična bubrežna bolest (KBB) jedan je od vodećih javnozdravstvenih problema sa značajnim porastom broja pacijenata svake godine. To je sindrom obilježen progresivnim i trajnim oštećenjem svih funkcija bubrega: ekskrecijske, metaboličke i endokrine. Kao vodeći uzroci u razvijenim zemljama spominju se dijabetička i hipertenzivna nefropatija. Bubrežna bolest može napredovati u kronično bubrežno zatajenje kroz nekoliko stadija, sve dok ne dostigne zadnji stadij kada je potrebno nadomještanje bubrežne funkcije metodama kao što je hemodijaliza, peritonealna dijaliza te na kraju transplantacija bubrega. Edukacija bolesnika prije liječenja dijalizom trebala bi biti osnova u skrbi za pacijente s KBB. Provođenje takvih sistematiziranih edukacijskih programa zahtjeva multidisciplinarni tim koji aktivno surađuje s pacijentima u programu. Cilj edukacijskih programa je informirati pacijente o samoj bolesti, te o načinima liječenja, te ih na taj način aktivno uključiti u odabir terapije koja najbolje odgovara njihovom stanju.Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of leading public health problems with significant increase in patient number each year. It is syndrome marked out by progressive and permanent damage of all kidney functions: excretion, metabolic and endocrine. Diabetic and hypertensive nephropathy is listed as its main cause in developed countries. Kidney disease can progress to chronic renal failure through several stages, until it reaches the last stage where is necessary to replace kidney function by methods such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis an eventually kidney transplantation. Education of patients before dialysis treatment should be basic care for patients with CKD. Conduction of systematic educational programs requires multidisciplinary team which actively collaborates with patients in such program. Goals of educational programs are to inform patients about disease and treatments as well as to include them in choosing the best treatment for their condition
