Abstract
Study objectives: To determine the presence of the burnout syndrome among nurses and to compare the intensity of the mentioned syndrome among nurses working as health visitors with those in the domain of home care service. Study design: The study was cross-sectional. Participants and methods: The study was conducted on a sample of 51 nurses. The study involved 24 nurses from the Health Visitor Service Department in the Public Health Centre Osijek and 27 nurses from the Institutions for Home Care Service “Jadranka Plužarić”, “Spomenka Kurina”, “Terica Breber” in the area of the City of Osijek. The study was conducted in the period from July to August 2016. Anonymous survey was used as the research method. The first part of the survey contained questions about the general socio-demographic data, and the second part consisted of a Questionnaire on the burnout syndrome intensity. The survey was designed in the framework of the activities of the Society for Psychological Assistance (Ajduković M. and Ajduković D, 1994). Results: There were 38 nurses in the category of "no signs of burnout," and 13 nurses comprised the group with the “specific warning signs”. 9 of the latter group of nurses come from the institutions for home health service and the remaining 4 work in the health visitor service. The median value of the total number of points on the burnout intensity Questionnaire was 21. Based on the categorization, a statistically significant difference was found in the frequency of the above categories (p <0.001). With regard to the other most important variables, there were no statistically significant differences. Conclusion: After examining the results obtained from the survey it can be concluded that the burnout syndrome was not present among the majority of participants. Specific warning signs were found to a bigger extent among the nurses in home care service, but without a statistically significant difference.
