During irradiation of thin foils of an austenitic stainless steel in a high voltageelectron microscope, steadily growing voids have been observed to suddenly shrink and disappear at the irradiation temperature of 650 C; the phenomenon has been observed in specimens both with and without inplanted helium. Possible mechanisms for void shrinkage during irradiation are considered. It is suggested that the dislocation-pipe-diffusion of vacancies from or of self-interstitial atoms to the voids can explain the shrinkage behaviour of voids observed during our experiments
