Lab., Denmark — Electrostatic tur-bulent structures are visualized on the TORPEX toroidal plasma ex-periment (R = 1m, a = 0.2m) using HEXTIP, an 86-tip, 2D Lang-muir probe array covering the whole poloidal section. To characterizesuch turbulence imaging data statistically, thus providing a quantitativebasis for comparison (theory-experiment, theory-theory, experiment-experiment), suitable observables like positions, shapes and velocitiesof structures must be defined. Several possible definitions are comparedin terms of information content, discriminative power, robustness andcomputational requirements. The statistical distribution of these observ-ables is experimentally measured on TORPEX as a function of controlparameters, i.e. quantities set externally and not subject to the plasmafeedback action. Among these, the magnetic field line pitch angle isshown to play a special role for the turbulence dynamics through itseffect on parallel flows, important to oppose drift-induced charge sepa-ration. The TORPEX results thus provide a highly discriminative testenvironment for turbulence models.
