Methods and Approaches in Teaching English

Abstract

Cilj je ovoga rada dati vlastiti osvrt na efikasnost metoda i pristupa poučavanja engleskog jezika. Rad je podijeljen u četiri poglavlja. Prvo poglavlje donosi povijesni pregled poučavanja engleskog jezika i lingvističkih teorija koje su utjecale na nastanak metoda poučavanja, kao i neke od faktora koji utječu na učenje stranog jezika. U drugom poglavlju opisane su metode poučavanja, dok su u trećem poglavlju opisani pristupi poučavanja engleskog jezika. Posljednje poglavlje prikaz je triju studija slučaja čija je svrha prikazati primjenu pojedinih metoda u praksi.The aim of this paper is to give a review of the efficiency of methods and approaches in teaching English presented in the theoretical part of this work. It is divided into four chapters. First chapter deals with retrospective of English teaching in the world and Croatia and linguistic theories that are closely connected to the origin of teaching methods. It also deals with the factors that may affect learning a foreign language – age motivation and fear of foreign language. Second chapter gives the theoretical description of traditional and alternative methods in teaching English language, and the third chapter presents the approaches in teaching foreign language. The final chapter shows 3 case studies with the purpose of showing the use of most of the methods and approaches which were presented in chapter two and three
