Impact of climate change on N-cycle and greenhouse gas fluxes in alpine grassland ecosystems: An in situ climate change experimentThis project investigates the short term impact of climate change(increasing temperature, decreasing precipitation) and extreme events(drought, heavy precipitation) on nitrogen storage and cycling as well asthe total greenhouse gas balance of alpine grasslands. The major goalof the project is in particular the identification of climate-change-sensitive C and N turnover processes and –pools in alpine grasslands.Detailed process studies will allow to judge the response of the centralN and C processes in soil (microbial nitrogen turnover, plant nitrogenuptake and nitrogen losses along hydrological pathways, greenhousegas exchange between soil and atmosphere, net CO2 ecosystemexchange, carbon and nitrogen storage in the system andcomposition/quality of soil organic matter) to the predicted climatechange. The study sites are grasslands located in the Ammercatchment area (TERENO-Climate-Feedback-Station „Ammer“,TERrestrial ENvironmental Observatories) along an altitudinal gradientand consequently along a natural temperature gradient (+ 2.5 C meanannual temperature) and precipitation gradient (- 500 mm mean annualprecipitation). These natural gradients will be used to simulate thebiosphere-hydrosphere-atmosphere-exchange processes under climatechange.
