Only welds fabricated according to execution standards are within the scope of actual design codes for welded connections. The execution standards do not tolerate imperfections like lack of fusion. However, a study will show, that lack of fusion frequently occurs at the weld root, especially if thick components are welded. Therefore, the effect of imperfections on the load bearing capacity of welds is investigated with experiments, numerical and fracture-mechanical calculations
