Abstract
Spatial Plan of the City of Zagreb cites the settlement of Sesvete as a city, to which all the surrounding rural and suburban settlements have been annexed, as a part of the Sesvete City District. However, from today’s point of view, Sesvete have no real autonomy in making and implementing policies and development plans, because all major decisions are made at the level of the City of Zagreb. Given that the discussion involves a City District that could be the fifth largest city in the Republic of Croatia by the number of people that inhabit it, this thesis examines the possibility of developing a concept for the future development of Sesvete as a center of Eastern Zagreb macro-region. Also, this thesis examines the potential for sustainable development, by developing a unique system of natural and open spaces
