IntroductionThe 20th century can be characterized by the domi-nance of the organic theory of oil generation, which hasalways been considered to be a scientifically groundedtheory. However, the assertion that natural petroleummight have arisen frombiological detritus (organicmatter)in the regimes of pressure and temperature found in thecrust of the Earth has long been recognized to be in glaringviolation of the fundamental laws of thermodynamics(Kenney et al., 2002). Furthermore, recently acquiredgeological information cannot be explained from thisviewpoint. For example, giant oil fields would require oforganic matter for their generation amounts that obviouslyexceed the Earth's organic resources.2. GeologyThe geodynamic evolution of the Russian Platesince the Late Proterozoic is characterized by perio-dical, vertical movements of large structural elementssuch as the Tatarstan Arch and the Perm-BashkirianArch that are represented by the Kazan-Kazhim andthe Kamsko-Belsky rifts. The rift-and-trough systemof the Russian Plate, that in turn created the TatarstanArch, began to form in the early Late Proterozoic.This system was produced by the extension of theEarth's crust that led to the formation – at theboundaries of the consolidated crystalline cores – ofdeep frontal faults dipping toward the plunging rifts.As a result, the Tatarstan Arch in the Riphean timebecame a horst-like body, similar to the White Tigerof the Mekong rift and the Hurgada horst of the Suezgraben's slope.3. MethodologyThe development of new exploration methods, suchas satellite surveys, deep marine and continentaldrilling, and the substantial improvement of the existingones (for instance, seismic profiling) — all permit theacquisition of the deep Earth's structural data, and thereview conventional geological concepts.
