Beginning of Lithuanian photo-journalism in a European context

Abstract

The article is about the researches of Lithuanian photojournalism history. The work reviews the development of photojournalism, analyses its parallels with the development of European photojournalism and tries to answer the following questions: Where does the beginning of photojournalism lie? How did photojournalism come to the press and in what kind of press it developed its potential the most? In Lithuanian periodicals, photojournalism appeared after the cancellation of the press ban. Comparing to other countries, photography was developing creatively in Lithuania. In 19th c.–beg. of the 20th c., many talented photographs who significantly contributed to Lithuanian culture worked in Lithuania. In Lithuania, more attention to documentary photography was paid only at the end of the 19th c. In comparison to the public information development in other nations, events' photography was developing gradually in Lithuania. Photography appeared later in daily papers than in illustrated weeklies or monthlies. At the beg. of the 20th c., from the viewpoint of photojournalism, the press of Vilnius Poles was more advanced and, following an example of other countries, published illustrated weeklies or supplements to daily papers. More and more attention was paid to the topic of ethnography in the revived Lithuanian press. Own illustrated weeklies such as “Atspindžiai”, “Krivulė”, “Iliustruotoji Lietuva” and “Naujas žodis” appeared only after 1918. Before it, a period of German photojournalism took place in Lithuania. The development and topic of Lithuanian photojournalism has not been sufficiently analysed in the European context yet.
