This thesis investigates the role of three generally accepted assumptions thatare made when mining text documents. The three assumptions are: that allwords in a document are equally informative, that the order in which the wordsappear is non-informative, and finally the independence assumption that resultin a non-burstiness assumption. The three assumptions simplifies many aspectsof context-mining, but are never the less not true and result poor documentmodeling and categorization. Existing models has been improved by use ofneural network sensitivities, natural language features, and a new probabilisticmodel that can adapt burstiness has been developed. These new approacheshave generally resulted in better context modeling and ability to categorizedocuments better
