The original casting of the Brunswick Castle Lion of 1166 is somewhat different in its chemical composition from a repairing found in the back of the statue. Both the alloys are red brass, one consisting of 10,3% Sn, 3,7% Pb, 8,9% Zn, the other one of 6,8% Sn, 2,6% Pb, 8,6% Zn. The structure observed in the original casting is explained as a special development of the eutectoid ([alpha] + [delta]), arising from a very slow cooling of the casting.
