New requirements for grippers used for the manipulation of micro objects are to avoid unintended sticking and releasing occurring during pick-and-place operations. This effect is found when the object dimensions are 1 mm and less. When the dimensions of the object are so small the adhesion forces between the micro object and the gripper do not allow simple picking and releasing of the object. This effect can be overcome by modifying the functional surface of the gripper. The functional surface of the gripper was modified by different machining techniques. The results of this investigation of the gripper surface have shown that modification of the surface geometry decreases the amount of sticking and makes mechanical grippers suitable for micro applications
