EDITORIAL Open AccessScoliosis and Spinal Disorders journal: a new,cutting-edge frontier in spine publishingTheodoros B. Grivas1* and Dino Samartzis2*With the start of 2016, we at the journal would liketo wish all our readers, reviewers and Editorial Boardmembers a most happy and prosperous new year.Ushering in this year, the journal has made someconsiderable changes. For one, the journal has beenrenamed Scoliosis and Spinal Disorders. We feel thatwith the ever-changing landscape of spinal conditionsas well as health-care utilization and the need for aforum to voice cutting-edge and multidisciplinaryspine research worldwide, [1, 2] we are broadeningthe scope of the journal to include all types of spinaldeformities and disorders that entail conservative andsurgical management that represent clinical or basicscience research. The journal will continue to provide anintegrated and balanced view of preventative, diagnostic,therapeutic, outcomes and cost-analyses research toenhance effective collaboration among spine specialistsand scientists. To reflect the broad, multidisciplinaryscope of the journal as well as its worldwide geograph-ical presence, we will gradually revamp the EditorialBoard. Thirdly, Dr. Dino Samartzis from the Departmentof Orthopaedics and Traumatology at The University ofHong Kong has been selected to serve as co-Editor-in-Chief alongside Dr. Theodoros B. Grivas. Dr. Samartzishas had a long and impactful career devoted to spineresearch, publishing and medical education throughoutthe world. His expertise and passion further reflects thejournal’s commitment to quality, dedication to the broadspectrum of spinal disorders, multidisciplinary nature, andglobalization of the spine community and research.The start of a new year is also a time for reflection. Inorder to understand where we are headed, we mustacknowledge and appreciate where we have been. After2 years since the formation of the Society on ScoliosisOrthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT),the board of the society launched in 2006 the Scoliosisjournal as its official journal and Dr. Hans-Rudolf Weissbecame its first Editor-in-Chief [3]. Dr. Weiss workedtirelessly to organize and establish the journal as anopen access publication by BioMed Central, a worldleader in open access medical publications. During thatperiod, the journal focused primarily on conservativemanagement of scoliosis. In 2008, Dr. Grivas succeededDr. Weiss as the journal’s Editor-in-Chief after havingserved as an Associate Editor. Dr. Grivas helped alignthe journal with numerous other societies and expandedthe editorial board substantially to include world re-nowned experts in the field. Under the leadership ofDr. Grivas, the journal further expanded its reach toinclude other spinal deformities besides scoliosis andalso became receptive to articles addressing surgicalmanagement of spine deformities. Dr. Grivas alsoexpanded the scope of the journal to address special-ized thematic series, such as brace technology,rehabilitation schools for scoliosis, school screeningfor scoliosis, SOSORT consensus and guidelines, andthe etiology of idiopathic scoliosis. The journalremains the official journal of SOSORT, but underthe direction of Dr. Grivas the journal became fur-ther affiliated with numerous other spine societies inan effort to broaden its demographic and impact. Aspreviously mentioned, the journal was subsequentlyrenamed to its current title - Scoliosis and SpinalDisorders. Currently, the journal remains an open access,multidisciplinary, peer- reviewed publication that focuseson original, primary research articles as well as broadnarrative/systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Thejournal is indexed in PubMed and in numerous othermajor search engines. BioMed Central remains thepublisher of the journal.Although the journal has enjoyed a rather auspiciousstart and sustainability, it has also managed to remainat the forefront of medical publishing.
