Poor compliance with prescribed medication leadsto increased morbidity and mortality. The number ofasthma cases has more than doubled since 1980 and,nearly 3 million workdays are lost annually due toasthma exacerbations. Non-compliance with therapy is amajor impediment to effective asthma management andcan lead to failure of treatment. The purpose of thestudy was to identify the better predictor for adherencebehaviors between knowledge of asthma, health beliefs,attitude toward the illness of asthma, and behavioralintention to adhere.Materials and methodsThis cross sectional study was conducted among adultasthmatic patients in three private asthma clinics inYazd city, Iran. Data was collected using face to faceinterview. During the interview a validated Question-naire was used to assess patients’ knowledge about ICS,’positive and negative health beliefs and attitudes a aboutICS, behavioral intention to comply with treatment, andcompliance rate. A 4-item patient-report scale was usedto measure medication adherence.ResultsResponse rate of participants 94%, adult (≥16 years old)with prescribed ICS reported were included (n=112).Analysis showed that majority of patients (55.5%) wasnon adherence to their prescribed ICS. Patients’ knowl-edge toward ICS did not have effect on medicationadherence behavior, while patients with positive attitudetoward ICS were better adherent with their medication.A simple linear regression identified intention to complywith treatment and positive attitude toward ICS as pre-dictors for adherence behavior.ConclusionsThe findings confirm a relationship between medicationattitude and adherence among asthmatic patients.
