Further, most SBI research efforts have focusedon the treatment of single risk factors despite the fact thatuse of psychoactive substances tends to co-occur. There isalso debate about the optimal timing of interventions formultiple risk behaviors, i.e., whether to intervene simulta-neously or sequentially. This study was designed to testthe efficacy of SBI practices aimed at dental patients whowere both smokers and at-risk drinkers. Participants (N =288) were randomized into four experimental conditionsto test the efficacy of comparative interventions fortobacco and at-risk alcohol use when delivered separatelyand in combined forms, and to compare the effects ofsequential versus simultaneous interventions. The resultsindicated that individuals in each of three active briefintervention (BI) groups (alcohol BI, tobacco BI, and com-bined alcohol and tobacco BI) significantly reduced self-reported drinks per week and cigarettes per day comparedwith those in the wait-list control group. There was noadvantage to the combined versus single-substancefocused interventions as individuals changed both beha-viors regardless of the treatment intervention received. Nosignificant differences in self-reported drinks per week orcigarettes per day were found between those receivingsimultaneous versus sequential interventions.
