This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons AttributionLicense, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properlycited.Several studies published over the last two decades haveprovided a good body of evidences supporting a centralrole of chronic low-grade inflammation as a major factordriving many of the metabolic complications commonlyfound in highly prevalent chronic diseases such as obe-sity, insulin resistance, and cancer. It was well establishedin these studies, for example, that activation of canonicalinflammatory pathways is one of themajor factors promotingthe impairment in insulin signaling seen in obesity andtype 2 diabetes, being responsible for the reduced glucoseuptake and exacerbated lipolysis found in this condition.Such important role of inflammation in chronic diseaseshas motivated several studies aiming at understanding themechanisms underlying its development and searching forefficient therapeutic strategies to minimize its metabolic con-sequences. In the present special issue, we gathered severaloriginal and review articles addressing potential nutritional,pharmacological, and behavioral strategies that could beused to counteract inflammatory process associated with avariety of diseases including obesity, periodontal disease,myocardial infarction, and pneumonia, among others. Ina very interesting study, for example, E. G. Novoselovaet al. experimentally tested individually or in combinationseveral inhibitors of NFkB pathway and naturally occurringantioxidants as anti-inflammatory agents in vivo bringingnew information about their therapeutic efficacy. In the samedirection, M. S. Elburki et al. tested the appropriatenessof using a novel chemically modified curcumin, a matrixmetalloproteinase inhibitor with no antibiotic properties, as atherapeutic molecule for the treatment of periodontal diseasewith promising results towards the attenuation of alveolarbone loss.In addition to the above-mentioned pharmacologicalagents, there are in this special issue two interesting studiesreporting promising effects of nutrients and vitamins as anti-inflammatory molecules in vivo. In a very elegant study,Y. Chen et al. report the beneficial actions of vitamin Csupplementation in the attenuation of the inflammation andoxidative stress induced by LPS inmacrophages fromhumanswith community-acquired pneumonia. Also important werethe findings of C. O. Souza et al. showing that a supplemen-tation with the monounsaturated palmitoleic acid markedlyattenuates obesity-associated fat accumulation, inflamma-tion, and insulin resistance in the liver, such effects that donot depend on the nuclear receptor peroxisome-proliferatoractivated receptor (PPAR) alpha.As detailed in the three different manuscripts discussedbelow, behavioral strategies such as exercise training werealso addressed in this special issue, as strategies to attenuateinflammatory processes. A. Correia et al., for example, reportin an original study interesting effects of exercise training indifferent intensities as an attenuator of the changes inducedby aging in skeletal muscle inflammation and metabolism.This study is followed by two comprehensive review articlesHindawi Publishing CorporationMediators of InﬂammationVolume 2014, Article ID 585708, 2 pageshttp://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/5857082 Mediators of Inflammationaddressing the effects of exercise training on inflammationand autonomic dysfunction induced bymyocardial infarction(B. Rodrigues et al.) and on lymphocyte metabolism andfunction in several conditions (F. Wasinski et al.). Finally,completing this special issue are the exciting findings of C. R.Balistreri et al. that report a strong association between toll-like receptor rs4986790 TLR4 polymorphism with develop-ment of type 2 diabetes in humans adding further support tothe previous recognized role of this inflammatory pathway inthe development of insulin resistance and S. Y.
