ABSTRACT
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a tropical fruit. One of the
mangosteen fruit parts that can be used is its pericarp. Pericarp of mangosteen
(Garcinia mangostana L.) produces red to purple due to the presence of
anthocyanin pigment. Anthocyanin has many benefits, one of them is as a natural
colorant. The aim of this study was to replace the synthetic colorant in face
powder to mangosteen pericarp extract as the natural colorant.
This study used laboratory experimental method. Powder formulation
consists of several components such as talc, zn stearate, bolus alba, liquid
paraffin, and mangosteen pericarp extract as natural colorant with concentrations
of 40.5%, 45.5%, and 50.5%. Extract of mangosteen pericarp was obtained by
maceration process with 95% ethanol. The tests for the extract include
organoleptic evaluation and color stability. Evaluation of powder was done with
organoleptic evaluation and stability test of the powder during 4 weeks of storage.
To ensure the safety, preparations were examined with irritation test in human and
pH test.
Formulation of powder using mangosteen pericarp extract as natural
colorant showed that the powder preparation attached to the skin with pH of 4.5 –
6.5. The best preparation was formula II with mangosteen pericarp extract
concentration of 45.5%, it showed no irritation in human and was stable during
storage temperature of 40˚C.
