Enigmas en torno a Saguntum y Rhoda

Abstract

The graeco-latin tradition seems to relate the names of the hispanic towns Saguntum and Rhoda with their respective origins. For Saguntum, there are no archaeologicai evidences of its graeco-roman reaiity; the Greek and Latin forms and use of its names in the literary sources are shown to be in agreement with the referential uses of the toponym Σαίγανυα (or Σαιγανυη), withnessed by the epigraphy of Emporion. For Rhoda, an attentive exarnination of the literary sources, and mainly the diaiectologicai analysis of the monetai legend on its silver ccdracmas~s,t rongly undennines the credibility of its pretended Rhodian origin
