El limerick és un poema breu que ha estat descrit com «el sonet del nonsense» (Tigges: 1988). Bona part de l'atractiu dels limericks radica en la seva estructura. És una anècdota, una narració en vers. Es compon de cinc versos iambicoanapèstics amb rima aabba, el primer dels quals presenta l'escenari i el personatge principal. Edward Lear (1812-1888) és considerat un dels millors representants de l'estil nonsense en general i del limerick en particular. Aquest article presenta una breu història del limerick i els seus trets característics -en particular dels d'Edward Lear. També s'hi estudien i analitzen, de forma descriptiva i comparativa, totes les traduccions a l'italià dels primers versos dels limericks d'Edward Lear.Limericks are short poems which have been considered as «the sonnet of nonsense» (Tigges 1988). Much of the attraction of the limerick lies in its anatomy. It is an anecdote, a narrative, in verse. It consists of five anapaestic lines rhyming aabba. The first line sets the scene and introduces the main character. Edward Lear (1812-1888) is considered as one of the best representatives of nonsense writing in general, and of limericks in particular. This article presents a short history of the limerick with its characteristic features -- and particularly those of Lear's. It also studies and analyses, from descriptive and comparative approaches, all the first lines of Edward Lear' translations into Italian
