FOCUS OF THE FELLOWSHIP
♦ This program is taught by a nationally known faculty 
and prepares the student to become actively involved in 
decision making in their environment 
♦ The program also provides the student the skills to 
become active change agents in their environments
THE FELLOWSHIP
♦ This week-long course is designed to familiarize 
individuals with the application of computer technologies 
and information science in biomedicine and health science
♦ Through a combination of lectures and hands-on 
computer exercises, participants will be introduced to the 
conceptual and technical components of biomedical 
informatics 
♦ The conceptual components include principles of 
database design, human-computer interfaces, medical 
terminologies and coding systems, medical decision 
analysis methods, clinical information systems 
architectures, and methods for measuring costs and  
benefits in health care systems
♦ The technical components include use of the Internet  
for biomedical applications, current and emerging wide 
area network technologies, use of literature and molecular 
sequence databases, and systems for telemedicine
♦ Elective evening workshops will teach personal 
computer skills in using a variety of World Wide Web-
based technologies

DREXEL UNIVERSITY
♦ Drexel University College of Nursing and Health 
Professions incorporates informatics in all aspects of 
the undergraduate and graduate nursing curriculum
♦ This ambitious informatics initiative requires 
extensive planning, creative leveraging of available 
resources, administrative support as well as a 
concerted effort to identify additional external 
opportunities and resources
♦ Since 2003 four of the  informatics faculty team 
were selected to complete the rigorous program
♦ This specialized training provided us the 
opportunity to develop a skilled and cohesive team of 
informaticists to serve as the driving force for 
technological innovation within the college

WHO CAN ATTEND
♦ This is a National Library of Medicine fellowship 
program geared toward medical librarians, administrators, 
health professionals, informatics specialists and young 
faculty who are not currently knowledgeable but can 
become agents of change in their institutions
♦ This fellowship is limited to 30 fellows for each     
session and is offered two times a year in Woods Hole, 
Massachusetts
♦ Fellows selected in Fall 2005 were the highest    
scoring individuals drawn from 133 applicants
IMPACT AT DREXEL
♦ As a result of this experience, we incorporate 
strategies to engage the students in making informed 
decisions utilizing tools, applications, technology and 
information resources to provide just-in-time 
information at the point of care
DREXEL FUTURE PLANS
♦ Plans are in place to have additional team 
members including librarians and non-nursing 
faculty complete the fellowship to support a 
university-wide interdisciplinary collaboration in 
innovation and research
♦ This experience has resulted in numerous 
curricular changes and we have additional strategic 
initiatives planned for the future
