Comparison of Electromagnetic Pumps with Permanent Magnets with other Electromagnetic Pumps

Abstract

Many science and technique fields use liquid metals. Every time when it is necessary to operate with liquid metals methods of magneto hydrodynamics (MHD) are the most suitable because liquid metals are good conductors of electricity. Liquid metals can be easily pumped using electromagnetic pumps. Electric current interacts with magnetic field and generates electromagnetic force, which makes liquid metal move. Electric current flows in liquid metal. Therefore electromagnetic pumps do not have direct contact with a pumped medium – there is no need in gaskets, channel of the pump is a hermetic construction. Electromagnetic pumps are used in many fields related with liquid metals. Most important examples are metallurgy and nuclear energetic
