BACKGROUND
♦ Complimentary modalities play an important role alone 
and in combination with pharmacologic therapies
♦ The causes or etiologies of PONV are complex, are 
many, and arise from many neural and hormonal pathways
♦At the 2006 American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses 
(ASPAN) PONV/PDNV Consensus Meeting, 
complementary evidence was reviewed and ranked for the 
efficacious use in the ASPAN  PONV / PDNV Guideline 
development

♦ Acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation 
(TENS), acupoint stimulation, acupressure, laser 
stimulation, aromatherapies with isopropyl alcohol, 
peppermint, ginger, showed statistically significant 
reductions in PONV in the immediate post-operative period 
but not thereafter
