Significance
          
            Here we demonstrate a novel feature of interneuron physiology that may have important implications for a better understanding of the relationship between rhythmical network activity and synaptic input patterns in the brain. We find that tonic GABA
            A
            conductance in interneurons can control this relationship in a biphasic, bell-shaped manner. As this tonic conductance increases, it fundamentally changes the interneuron firing mode, from being a faithful readout of stochastic excitatory synaptic input to becoming attuned to the intrinsic cell properties. The latter mode supports synchronic oscillations in brain networks. Our results suggest a previously unrecognized mechanism of network synchronization control that may explain how different concentrations of ambient GABA can either facilitate or suppress hippocampal rhythms.
