This essay is contributes to the literature on the history and interpretation of images of conflict. The paper is based on close analysis of Ian Berry’s photographs of the Sharpeville Massacre, an interview with the photographer and fieldwork at the fiftieth anniversary commemorations at Sharpeville in March 2010. The collection is edited by leading scholars in the field of photographic history and theory. I was invited to present an earlier version of this paper for a panel on ‘Images and Ethics’ at the Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Association Annual Conference, London School of Economics and Political Science, January 2010
