Annual Report FY 2018  
(July 1, 2017–June 30, 2018)
The Office Of Scholarly Communications (OSC) consists of Paul Royster (Coodinator 
of Scholarly Communications), Sue Gardner (Scholarly Communications Librarian), 
Margaret Mering (Metadata Librarian), and Linnea Fredickson (Scholarly 
Communications Production Specialist).  It is part of the Media and Repository Services 
(MARS) Department, headed by Deeann Allison.
The OSC began the year by hosting the ACRL Scholarly Communications Roadshow on 
July 12, 2017. The roadshow was a day-long seminar presented by Will Cross of North 
Carolina State University, Jaron Porciello of Cornell University, and Elizabeth Brown 
of SUNY-Binghamton. Subjects included issues surrounding copyright and fair use, 
the movement for open educational resources, scholarly communications systems and 
projects, data management, social media, altmetrics, and open access policies. About 
100 librarians from a four-state area attended (Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska). All 
levels of higher education institutions were represented. Approximately $7,000 in grants 
covered the costs; funds were generously supplied from Research Council of UNL, ACRL, 
and the Dean’s Office.
During the fall semester, the OSC joined the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed 
Link-out program, which connects users of the PubMed database to full-text free-access 
online versions on external repositories. Qualifying required finding and supplying links 
for a minimum of 1,000 peer-reviewed articles in our Digital Commons institutional 
repository that were (a) included in the PubMed database, and (b) not represented in the 
free full-text PubMed Central archive. The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is one of only 
a handful of U.S. universities represented.
During the Fall of 2017, the Round Table on Intellectual Freedom of the Nebraska Library 
Association (K. Joan Birnie, Karen Drevo, Brenda Ealey, Michael Elsener, Sue Ann Gardner, 
Timothy Lentz, and Todd Schlechte) was honored with the Gerald Hodges Intellectual 
Freedom Chapter Relations Award from the American Library Association. One of 
our Zea Books, Nebraska Intellectual Freedom Manual, 2016 Edition, assembled by the 
Round Table and co-authored, co-edited, and produced by Sue Gardner, was among

Institutional Repository  (IR)
Deposits: The UNL Digital Commons grew during the year by the addition of 284 new 
dissertations (in the ProQuest database) and 5,339 open-access articles, theses, 
presentations, ebooks, etc., for a total growth of 5,623 new items. Total contents on 
6/30/18 was 98,493 documents.
Traffic: During the year, the IR received 7,536,785 total hits and delivered 6,614,599 
downloads. Research suggests it was the most-visited and most-downloaded IR in 
America during that time. It consistently provided between 14% and 18% of all traffic 
to the unl.edu domain and was the most-visited subdomain on the university website.

Royalties paid to authors (for calendar years 2016 & 2017) were $1,200.47.

Staffing Notes
Sue Gardner was on faculty development leave during spring semester of 2018.
Andrew Cano joined the OSC during the summer of 2018; his contributions will be 
included in next year’s report.
Student Workers
The OSC was assisted this year by the contributions of four student workers.  
Edgar Reynaga and Nicole Boguss handled digitization work, producing pdf files 
from hard-copy originals. Gina Lucero uploaded and published files to the IR. Gina 
and Edgar both graduated in May 2018, having worked with us for 3 or more years. 
Both were first-generation college graduates. Edgar went on to a public service 
internship in Omaha; Gina entered a health care degree program in Kansas City. In 
May and June we were assisted by David Clawson, who took over Gina’s upload-
and-publish duties.
