Flying a kite near electri c wtres is dangerous. When 
Hying a kite, a lways make sure the kite string is dry. If yo u 
use wet string, a wire, or a string with wire in it, yo u are 
asking for troubl e. Don't try to free a kite from high voltage 
wires if it gets tangled up in them . R emember, Ben Frank-
lin has alread y discovered electricity by the use of a kite. 
Don ' t attempt to discover it in th e same way.

Irrigation pipe need not touch an overhead power line 
to kill the handler. A workman may lift a light irrigation 
pipe to be moved to a new location or to be placed on an 
irrigation trailer. If he lifts the pipe too high and comes 
close to or in contact with an overhead power supply line, 
death usually results.

Never stack ha y und er a power line. Many persons have 
been electrocuted simply because they didn ' t LOOK UP. 
Modern hayi ng eq uipment operates high above the ground.

trucks with spou ts o n them, and mixing uni ts a re equally 
d a ngero us. A farm wir ing sys tem sho uld be p lanned to 
a llow at leas t o ne passageway for the movement of ta ll 
equipment.

Cranes and booms coming in contact with power lines 
have caused many deaths in Nebraska. Crane operators 
sho uld be warned to stay away from overhead power lines. 
In many cases, the operator may not be injured severely; 
however, workmen sta nding on the ground who come near 
or touch th e machine are usually the ones who are injured 
or killed. Safety devices are ava ilable for booms or cranes. 
They wi ll insulate the machine from the high voltage wires 
in case electrica l contact is made.

power source. Push or pull him away with a dry st ick. Do 
not use one that conta ins sap, since it may be a conductor of 
electricity. A dry rope also may be used. Ma ke sure the 
rescuer is sta nding on dry gro und . Attempt this rescue onl y 
if yo u are willing to accept grave risk of your life. 
Don 't fi gure on Lady Luck to watch over th e safe ty of 
yo u and your co-workers. It is up to you to rea li ze that 
dangers ex ist around high voltage electr ical equipment. 
Us ually it is impossi ble to remove these d angers. Yo u ca n, 
however, accept the fact that hazards do ex ist. Use good 
judgment and lea rn to li ve wi th these haza rds.

lages. Operators should keep the spray mist and passenger platform 
away from overhead power poles. Don't electrocute yourself while 
trying to kill the bugs.

What Should Be Done in Case of an Accident? 
If you are successful in free ing the victim, start a rtifi cial respira tion 
a t o nce if the victim is no t brea thing. 
T he two methods of artifi cial respira tion recommended are the 
mo uth- to-mo uth and back pressure-arm lift. In the case o f electric 
shock, the muscles controlling th e brea thing system are paralyzed o r 
deeply depressed , or ca rbon mo nox ide has displaced oxygen in the 
blood stream. \Vhen these cases are encountered , a rtifi cial respira tion 
must o ften be ca rried on fo r long periods o f time. 
There are cases where the victim may be brea thing, but m ay still 
need assistance. In situ at ions such as this, the person giving artific ial 
respiratio n sho uld time his effor ts to co incide with the victim's a ttempt 
to breathe for himself. 
If vomiting occurs during artifi cial respira tion, quickl y turn the 
victim on his side, wipe o ut th e mouth, reposition him and then con-
tinue artifi cial respiratio n. 
\ !\Then the victim is rev ived , he sho uld be kept as quiet as poss ible 
until he is b rea thing regul arl y. H e sho uld be kept covered and o ther-
wise trea ted for shock until suitable transportation is available, or 
until a physician arrives. 
Artificial respira tion sho uld be con t inued until the victim begins 
to breathe fo r himself, until a physician pronoun ces him dead , or 
until he appears to be dead beyond any doubt. 
A doctor 's care is necessary during the recovery period , as respi ra-
tory and o ther disturbances may d evelop as a n afterma th .

Elevators, T V antennas, and irrigatio n pipes sho uld be handled 
in such a way as to keep them away from power lines. \1\i in<l, condi-
tio ns of the ground, and direc tio n of movement should be considered

A few sim ple procedures sho uld be followed when moving ta ll 
t:quipment around overhead lines : 
1. Plan and inspect the ro ute you will tra ve l. Kn ow the height o f 
your equipment and all power lines. 
2. No tify the power company o f yo ur pl ans. They will cooperate 
with you if poss ible in providing safe transportatio n.

3. Secure all swinging parts before mov mg. Consider the possi-
bility of uneven ground . 
4. Do not raise power lines for any reason. 
5. Ha ve trained personnel o bserve equipment m haza rdo us areas. 
Acts of vandalism such as breaking insula tors and bulbs, 
defacing signs, and many other types of malicious des truc-
tion, may result in an arrest to the person inflicting the 
damage. A heavy fin e or imprisonment co uld resu lt from 
this type of activity. 
Such mali cio us destruction ca n result in a loss to the 
power supplier for th e cost of repairs and labor, and also 
to their employees, who must subj ect themse lves to extra 
dangers while repa iring the damage.
