The Influence of Landscape Transformation on the Formation of the Croatian National Identity

Abstract

Humanističko-geografska interpretacija uloge krajolika u formiranju identiteta nacionalne zajednice. Rad temi pristupa pokrivajući teorijski okvir kojim potkrepljuje primjere navedene u argumentaciji. The paper presents a socio-geographic interpretation of the influence of landscape on the formation of identity in a national context. This interpretation depends on firstly providing its broader theoretical framework, which is then in turn implemented as a basis for analyzing and discussing specific examples. The main premise of the paper is comprised around the idea that identity functions as a form of narrative, a structure inherently dependent on language. It follows, therefore, that literature proves to be unavoidable as a medium of identity formation and representation, while the historical circumstances remain crucial in forming the very conceptual basis through which landscape is perceived and incorporated into the individual's subjectivity
