Abstract

This paper deals with a synchronic etymological analysis of both the epithets ‘\u3bc\u3ac\u3c7\u3b7 \u3ba\u3c5\u3b4\u3b9\u3ac\u3bd\u3b5\u3b9\u3c1\u3b1’ and ‘\u3c6\u3b8\u3b9\u3c3\u3af\u3bc\u3b2\u3c1\u3bf\u3c4\u3bf\u3c2’. In the first part, I analyse the term ‘\u3ba\u3c5\u3b4\u3b9\u3ac\u3bd\u3b5\u3b9\u3c1\u3b1’. From a semantic perspective, this term cannot be interpreted as a possessive compound whose FM follows the Caland’s law, an observation that opens up other issues, which I tackle in my study. My hypothesis is that ‘\u3ba\u3c5\u3b4\u3b9\u3ac\u3bd\u3b5\u3b9\u3c1\u3b1’ was probably formed by analogy on the example of other compounds which show \ub0\u3ac\u3bd\u3b5\u3b9\u3c1\u3b1 as SM. In the second part, I analyse the term ‘\u3c6\u3b8\u3b9\u3c3\u3af\u3bc\u3b2\u3c1\u3bf\u3c4\u3bf\u3c2’ in order to verify Benveniste’s hypothesis that the verbal governing compounds with marked word-order, namely whit verbal FM, imply ‘an actual predicate of description’. Therefore, the battle should ‘destroy the mortals’ only – or especially – in those passages in which the battle is defined as ‘\u3c6\u3b8\u3b9\u3c3\u3af\u3bc\u3b2\u3c1\u3bf\u3c4\u3bf\u3c2’. Curiously, the only occurrence of ‘\u3bc\u3ac\u3c7\u3b7 \u3c6\u3b8\u3b9\u3c3\u3af\u3bc\u3b2\u3c1\u3bf\u3c4\u3bf\u3c2’ (㧓39) is characterized by a rare insistence on the dangers of the battle; moreover, the occurrence of ‘\u3b1ἰ\u3b3ὶ\u3c2 \u3c6\u3b8\u3b9\u3c3\u3af\u3bc\u3b2\u3c1\u3bf\u3c4\u3bf\u3c2’ (㱲97) connotes the aegis as a signal of inexorable and oncoming death, as it is described in the passage (㱲97-301). Although the occurrences of the term ‘\u3c6\u3b8\u3b9\u3c3\u3af\u3bc\u3b2\u3c1\u3bf\u3c4\u3bf\u3c2’ are very few, I conclude that the use of ‘\u3c6\u3b8\u3b9\u3c3\u3af\u3bc\u3b2\u3c1\u3bf\u3c4\u3bf\u3c2’ seems to uphold Benveniste’s hypothesis
