Control and interface of renewable energy systems

Abstract

Renewable Energy Systems (RES) have gained renewed interest due to the present day energy crisis, the high cost of the conventional fuel, the high rate at which the conventional fuel is being consumed and the environmental issues. There are several renewable energy sources: Wind energy, Solar Energy, Hydro Power, Bio-fuels, Wave energy, Tidal Power, Ocean thermal energy, Geothermal energy, etcetera. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate different control and interface schemes for renewable energy systems. Two renewable energy sources, namely Wind and Solar Energy and the associated energy conversion schemes have been studied using different converter topologies (line-communicated/self-commutated converter, controlled/uncontrolled rectification), different control strategies (phase control/PWM technique), and different Controller Strucures.
