In vitro effects of the antibacterial Triclosan in Dreissena polymorpha haemocytesThe effects of the popular antibacterial Triclosan (TCS) on circulating cells of the sentinel-organism Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) were investigated in order to evaluate the potential risk due to this common pharmaceutical on freshwater biocoenosis.Haemocytes were exposed for 60 min at 20 °C to three sublethal concentrations of TCS (0.1, 0.15, 0.2 µM) that assured a cell viability up to 50%. The retention time of the dye Neutral Red (NRRT assay), the levels of DNA strand breaks (comet assay) and the proportion of apoptosis induction (HALO assay) were measured. No significant damage to the integrity of the lysosomal membranes were assessed since the mean NRRT for all the tested concentrations reached values comparable with respective controls. In contrast, a time- and dose-related increase of DNA injuries and apoptotic cells were noticed with significant (p<0.05) differences towards the baseline levels.
