New lyotoropic liquid crystals have been designed and synthesized. They consist of self-assembled coordination cages and triphenylene derivatives substituted with six hydrophilic oligo(ethyleneoxide) chains. A self-assembled charge-transfer complex was formed by self-assembly of the cages and the discotic molecules, which was confirmed by cold-spray ionization mass spectrometry, UV-VIS and 1H NMR measurements. Polarizing optical microscopies and small-angle X-ray scattering measurements for the complexes show the formation of the hexagonal columnar assemblies in the presence of small amount of H2O.</p
