There is increasing demand for lightweight vehicle structures due to the requirement for low fuel consumption. As the basic component of the vehicle body, the body-in-white (BIW) structure can be made substantially lighter by using lighter gauge body panels. However, lighter gauge panels tend to generate more vibration and interior noise, so it is necessary to use an optimized vibro-acoustic package in order to achieve a better level of vibro-acoustic performance while minimising the increase in vehicle body weight. In this paper the vibro-acoustic package for a light weight van body is optimised by judicious application of panel damping treatment to appropriate parts of the structure to damp out local panel resonances in the BIW’s structural response, resulting in 5.42 dB reduction in overall modal mobility for a 1.37% increase in the BIW’s weight
