This paper aims to analyse the types of poverty found in Sanggang village, Bulu, Sukoharjo
District, the governmental and non-governmental organisations in alleviating the poverty in
Sanggang village. They are cultural, structural and natural poverties. The cultural poverty
can be seen from the minimum participation of people in poverty in the social organisations,
either in the community, in sub-district or in district level. They have relatively large number
children. They tend to develop a broad family where the husband, wife, children and parents
live in one family. They have the long working hour but their income is relatively low.
The poor people have made various efforts to alleviate their poverty, including cultivating
the barren land for planting cassava or peanuts, and looking for wood in the forest for substituting
oil for fire. The government and private sectors have also done some efforts by making some
programs. Their efforts, however, are not effective enough to tackle the problems of the rural
poverty in Sanggang village. The programs, nevertheless, have been able to create happiness of
the rural families, especially those suffering poverty.
