However, laboratory studies on mineral physics are required to explain those observations, in relation to the composition, structure and dynamics of the mantle. Electrical conductivity is a one of such powerful physical parameter, which can be used to. The research work describe in this thesis is consist of two parts based on the electrical conductivity of mantle materials geophysical observations in the upper mantle.  Electromagnetic (EM) studies showed that electrical conductivity largely increases in the mantle transition zone (410-660 km). Olivine transforms to wadsleyite at 410 km depth and it is expected that the large increase in electrical conductivity could be explained by the phase transitions. In addition to such a global scale problem, origin of high conductivity at the wedge mantle is also an open question and the hydration of minerals is often regarded as a cause for the high conductivity.  In order to discuss the electrical structure of the TZ, electrical conductivity of wadsleyite has to be determined. The first part of this study reports the electrical conductivity of hydrous and anhydrous wadsleyite measured as a function of temperature at pressure 16 GPa, corresponding to the mantle transition zone. This study suggests about one order magnitude conductivity increase associated with the olivine-wadsleyite transition in water-free conditions. Hydration enhances the conductivity, but its contribution is relatively smaller at the mantle transition zone. Further, it is difficult to determine less than 0.1 wt% of water for the normal geotherm. The conductivity-depth profiles model present in this study, well agrees with the recent geophysical models, which does not support the idea of globally hydrated mantle transition zone.  The high conductivity observed at the wedge mantle can not be explained by hydrous wadsleyite. Alternatively, presence of either phase-E or supercritical fluids at the wedge mantle is proposed. The second part of this thesis consists of electrical conductivity of olivine + synthetics MORB analog to investigate partial melting hypothesis in the asthenosphere. It has been observed globally that the electrical conductivity sharply increase beginning from 60 Km depths. In addition to that, recent magnetotelluric study at the southern East Pacific Rise indicates anisotropic conductivity structure beginning at 60 km depths, in which the conductivity comparable with dry olivine has observed in the ridge parallel direction and about an order magnitude higher conductivity has observed in the plate spreading direction.  The authors attributed this observation to the alignment of hydrous olivine in the [100] direction, because it was believed that hydrous olivine has much higher conductivity than normal olivine, and it also has very strong anisotropy in conductivity.  However, recent conductivity measurements for hydrous olivine from our laboratory declined this hypothesis, because we found that conductivity of hydrous olivine is comparable with normal olivine at high temperatures, and its anisotropy is negligibly small. The purpose of this research is to show that the anisotropic electrical structure at the top of the asthenosphere is caused by the aligned melt due to stress of the spreading plates. To experimentally demonstrate this scenario we have designed cell assembly to facilitate both conductivity measurements and simple shear deformation simultaneously. The conductivity and melt texture data show about an order conductivity increase and alignment of melt to channels or tubes along the shear direction.  論文審査結果の要旨   本研究は、二つの部分から成る。第一部はマントル遷移層上部主要構成鉱物であるワズレアイトの電気伝導度測定である。ワズレアイトは最大３％という多量の水を含みうるため、その電気伝導には、ホッピング伝導とプロトン伝導の二つが寄与する。これ迄の研究では、この二つの伝導メカニズムの各々の寄与を決定していないため、それらの測定結果を地球内部に適用することが出来なかった。候補者は、ワズレアイトの電気伝導度を温度と含水量の関数として決定し、ホッピング伝導とプロトン伝導の寄与を分離することに成功した。この測定結果と海洋下のマントル遷移層の電気伝導度観測と比較することにより、海洋下のマントル遷移層は本質的に無水であることを明らかにした。また、沈み込み帯のマントルの電気伝導度は、含水量 1％のワズレアイトで説明できることを示したが、この推定は地震学的観測と相容れないので、沈み込み帯のマントル遷移層が含水状態であるとは言えないことを明らかにした。  第二部はせん断場におけるモデル部分熔融カンラン岩の電気伝導度測定である。東太平洋海嶺近傍のアセノスフェア最上部は 1 桁以上の電気伝導度異方性を持つ。この異方性は、アセノスフェア最上部が部分熔融し、それがリソスフェアの移動によりせん断されるために引き起こされるためである、という仮説の元、上記の実験を行った。その結果、1.6%部分熔融したモデルカンラン岩は、せん断歪 0.3 以上で 1 桁の異方性を持ち、それ以上の歪では異方性の大きさは一定であることを示した。また、異方性の大きさは歪速度に依らないことを示した。海洋底リソスフェアがスムーズに移動できるためには、アセノスフェアの軟化が必要である。その原因として、部分熔融と含水軟化が考えられてきた。近年、含水軟化説の支持者が多いが、含水軟化説では電気伝導度異方性は説明できないことが明らかになっている。本研究では部分熔融仮説により電気伝導度異方性が説明できることを証明し、プレートテクトニクスが始まってからの大問題の一つを解決した。  この二つの研究は、いずれも世界最先端の研究であり、地球物理学的に重要な知見を導いていて、学位論文としての十分な内容である。
