Tese de mestrado, História Regional e Local, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Letras, 2011A vila de Alenquer, de rico passado histórico, acolheu na sua malha urbana uma importante
bolsa industrial, cujo primeiro estabelecimento, a fábrica das Chitas, aí veio instalar-se no último
quartel do século XVIII. Depois, ao longo de todo o século XIX, a esta manufactura seguiram-se
importantes fábricas de papel e de lanifícios, que fizeram de Alenquer, na província da
Estremadura, oito milhas a norte de Lisboa, uma progressiva vila industrial.
Com esta dissertação pretendemos estudar o nascimento, desenvolvimento e declínio dessa
bolsa industrial, o que necessariamente nos levou à identificação das causas ou factores que
atraíram para esta vila as fábricas que teve, assim como dos homens a quem pertenceu tal iniciativa,
que capitais aqui foram investidos e por aqui giraram, do como se equiparam essas fábricas, que
emprego proporcionaram, por que vicissitudes passaram e como vieram a desaparecer.
Sendo evidente que a localização da vila, próxima do rio Tejo e de Lisboa, foi um dos factores
determinantes para o sucesso desta bolsa, necessário se tornou estudar as suas acessibilidades e
ligação aos mercados.
A existência de uma numerosa população operária, à época socialmente tão vulnerável, levounos
ainda ao estudo e identificação de algumas respostas aos problemas sociais que então mais
atingiram essa população, assim como ao da escola de desenho industrial que aqui funcionou por
breve lapso de tempo, projecto por que lutaram as forças vivas da terra vendo nele um veículo de
formação e promoção dos jovens alenquerenses e do também jovem operariado da terra.The town of Alenquer, with a rich historycal past, has taken in its urban area an important
industrial cluster, which first great establishment – the Fábrica das Chitas (fabrics factory ) was
installed in the last quarter of the 18th century. Then, during the 19th century, paper and wool factories of great importance were built, that made Alenquer one progressive industrial town in the
province of Estremadura, located 8 miles North from Lisboa.
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the emergence, the development and the sinking of
that industrial cluster. This took us to the identification of the causes or factors for its existence in
this town, as well as of the men who took the lead, which funds were invested and how they were
managed, how these factories were equipped, in which way they created employment, its continual
changes and how they disappeared.
Since that the location of this town – near Tagus River and Lisbon, has been one of the main
causes for the success of this cluster, it became necessary to study its accessibilities and connection
to the markets.
The existence of a large working class, so much vulnerable by that time, took us also to the
study and identification of some answers to the social issues that affected this class and of the
industrial design school that operated here for a short period of time and was see an education and
promotion agent for the youth and the working class of Alenquer
