AUS-ACCESS4EU•	The	 EU	 is	 Australia’s	 largest	 scientific	 partner.	There	is	a	growing	awareness	of	the	value	of	closer	European-Australian	collaboration	in	research	from	both	the	research	and	policy	communities.•	In	 1994	 Australia	 was	 the	 first	 country	 to	 sign	an	 S&T	 agreement	 with	 the	 EU	 and	 since	 then	cooperation	has	steadily	increased	across	a	diverse	range	of	areas.	•	The	EC-Australia	S&T	cooperation	roadmap	aims	to	strengthen	cooperation	in	specific	areas	and	use	collaborative	research	to	address	global	challenges.•	The	 EU-Australia	 Partnership	 Framework,	adopted	 in	2008,	agrees	to	ongoing	collaboration	in	innovation,	science	and	research.•	Australia’s	 participation	 in	 the	 EU	 Framework	Programme	 is	 underpinned	 by	 strong	 bilateral	research	 collaboration	 with	 a	 number	 of	 EU	countries. What can AUS-ACCESS4EU do for you? Database of RTDI programmes •	We	map	existing	access	opportunities	for	Europeans	in	Australian	RTDI	programmes.•	We	 develop	 practical	 participation	 guidelines	and	 FAQs	 for	 European	 researchers	 interested	 in	participating	in	Australian	RTDI	programmes.•	We	 organise	 information	 days	 in	major	 European	cities	 to	 give	 researchers,	 research	 managers	 and	administrators	 the	 opportunity	 to	 meet	 Australian	programme	 managers	 and	 find	 out	 more	 about	the	 programmes	 on	 offer.	 Details	 of	 forthcoming	information	days	are	listed	on	the	Events	page	on	our	website.•	We	regularly	publish	up-to-date	information	in	our	AUS-ACCESS4EU	e-newsletter	which	is	downloadable	from	our	website	at	www.aus-access4.eu.•	AUS-ACCESS4EU	partners	will	inform	the	Australia-European	 Union	 Joint	 Science	 and	 Technology	Cooperation	 Committee	 (JSTCC)	 on	 the	 state	 of	S&T	 cooperation	 and	 present	 recommendations	 to	strengthen	the	Australian-EU	S&T	relationship.A	 ‘one-stop	 shop‘	 providing	 a	 wide	 range	 of	information	 about	 research	 and	 innovation	programmes	 open	 to	 EU	 researchers	 can	 be	accessed	 in	the	RTDI	programme	database	on	the	ACCESS4EU	web	portal	at	www.access4.euIndividual	 ACCESS4EU	 projects	 focus	 on	 the	following	countries:Australia India South	AfricaBrazil Mexico South	KoreaCanada New	Zealand USAChina RussiaThe	web	 portal	 and	 database	 are	 not	 only	 useful	for	European	 (and	other)	 researchers	 interested	 in	cooperation	with	Third	Countries,	but	also	for	policy	makers	 and	 other	 stakeholders	 who	 would	 like	to	know	more	about	 the	 research	and	 innovation	landscapes	in	the	ACCESS4EU	countries.ACCESS4EU	 projects	 aim	 to	 increase	 the	 European	research	community’s	awareness	of	opportunities	 to	participate	 in	 research,	 technological	 development	and	 innovation	 (RTDI)	 programmes	 in	 industrialised	partner	countries	outside	the	EU.	In	this	context	AUS-ACCESS4EU	will:•	highlight	 Australia’s	 distinctive	 research	 strengths	and	resources,	where	they	may	complement	those	of	the	various	European	regions;•	map	 opportunities	 open	 to	 European	 researchers	and	 provide	 this	 information	 through	 an	 RTDI	database	and	information	days	in	Europe;•	identify	barriers	to	greater	European	participation	at	policy	and	practical	levels;•	discuss	project	data	with	key	Australian	programme	owners	 and	 other	 stakeholders,	 providing	 the	opportunity	 to	 facilitate	 further	 development	 of	cooperative	research	policies.The	 project	 runs	 from	October	 2009	 to	 September	2011.Robert Kerton, © CSIRO John Coppi, © CSIRO © CSIRO
