Abstract
Spectrometer is a device that registers the spectrum directly by the electronic detector and measures its intensity. Since spectra are produced in different ways, spectrometers are very different in performance and degree of complexity. This graduate thesis deals with the historical development of optical spectrometers, from the first ones with prism to the contemporary ones such as Michelson's interferometer and Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS). The emphasis is on studying the physical basis of the most important types of optical spectrometers
